A Photo DVD
Consider making a family or vacation DVD for your parents.
Most computers come with programs such as Movie Maker that are easy to use. Even
if your parents are computer savvy, in many cases, projects such as this remain
on their “should do” list rather than their “already did” list. You could even
make a set of several DVD's if you have the time and inclination. Don’t make
each DVD longer than 15 minutes or so. Utilize your parent’s digital photos and
select the best ones to compile in chronological order. If you are using Movie
Maker (sorry, I’m not familiar with other programs but I’m guessing they are
pretty similar), once you’ve decided on the photos for your storyboard, be sure
to use the transitions in between the photos to make the DVD appear more
professional. Additionally, it’s important to select music for the DVD based on
your parent’s tastes rather than your own.
Books
Book lovers love books. If you have no idea what your dad
likes to read, then a gift card is always a great idea. If you are familiar
with the types of books your mom enjoys but have no idea what to get her; try
this. Go online to Amazon. On the home page in the “search” box, select books.
In the “go” box on the right of search, type “best sellers.” Then, on the next
page in the “sort by” box, select “customer reviews.” If you are interested in
the latest books rather than customer reviews, choose “publication date”
instead of customer reviews. Once you’ve browsed through the pages of books;
read the reviews and book summaries, you will have plenty of information to
make an informed decision. Then, head to the bookstore and purchase the book,
or if you are in a position to do so, order it online.
Christmas Gift Basket
Make a custom gift basket for mom, dad or both. Purchase a
large basket that is tasteful and that your parents can use around the house
after Christmas. Then, buy and carefully arrange several items that your
parents would enjoy in the basket. Baskets can often be found for 30 to 50
percent off if you shop prudently. Alternately, find a suitable basket or even
big box around the house that you can use (you might want to line it with a
clean towel or tissue paper). A large gift bag from the dollar store will
suffice as well, but purchase some tissue paper so that you can individually
wrap items going into the bag. Once the gift basket is full, use a shrink wrap
bag from the dollar store with colorful Christmas ribbon and follow the
instructions that come with the shrink bag.
Here are some suggestions for Christmas gifts to put in the
gift basket. If you have a limited budget, just buy one or two items and forget
the basket.
